I was fortunate to work with Leo when I'm was 16. He helped me learn the ropes of running a gravel crusher for Charlie MacKay. There were many hot. sunny and dusty days working in gravel pits. The crusher shook continuously from breaking rock. It was hard work but Leo kept the crusher running. He made a tough job a lot easier with his assistance and advice. I learned a lot from Leo and know what a great person he was. Rest in peace, Leo!.

I remember when Leo would call me on the phone and ask me if I like to go for a semi ride with him and I would respond by saying YES that would be great. He would tell me that he would be on highway 17 and stopping to pick me up in twenty minutes so be at the end of our lane way to get picked up. I would respond by saying I would be there! I would be standing at the end of our driveway when I would hear his semi gearing down and he would honk his air horn so I knew he was getting close to our driveway. Then Leo would turn on his flashing lights and I would cross the highway ready to get into the passenger side of the truck. Then off we went heading down the highway. Just a few hours of driving and lots of talking and we were soon in Forestburg in a lineup to be loaded with coal. The coal was dumped on the ground and lit on fire for warming up the ground so that the loader operator’s could dig basements for new homes in Lloydminster. I remember going on many trips for coal with Leo and enjoyed listening to all of his great stories he told to me. We had lots of laughs together on these trips. Needless to say I eventually was hired at Feldspar and got the chance to work with Leo on many jobs in and around Lloydminster which I enjoyed but not as much as I enjoyed riding with Leo to Forestburg hauling coal through the winter months. Maybe problems were solved on those long drives together. Memories I will never forget! Leo was a great friend to me. And I will treasure my many memories of our time spent together.
